The Ultimate Vanilla Ice Cream Taste Test
A co-worker once told me that vanilla ice cream was “too simple.” That comment actually made me smile because I don’t think simplicity is a weakness. In many cases, the simplest foods are often the most satisfying. Whether it’s homemade vanilla ice cream or a store-bought version, its classic and uncomplicated nature is exactly what makes it so appealing.

A co-worker once told me that vanilla ice cream was “too simple.” That comment actually made me smile because I don’t think simplicity is a weakness. Vanilla ice cream is incredibly versatile. It can be upgraded with creative toppings, turned into an impressive frozen dessert, or enjoyed completely on its own. Sometimes, nothing beats the pure flavor of a well-made vanilla ice cream. That’s why I decided to taste test seven popular brands and find out which one truly deserves the top spot.
How I Selected the Ice Creams
For this comparison, I focused only on classic vanilla ice cream. I avoided specialty versions, such as vanilla bean varieties or other upgraded flavors with extra descriptions, so every product could be judged fairly based on the same standard.
How I Tested the Ice Creams
To make the tasting as unbiased as possible, I asked someone else to scoop each ice cream into bowls before we tried them. This prevented the packaging and brand names from influencing our opinions.
During the tasting, we considered both flavor and texture, since enjoying ice cream is about more than just taste. The creaminess, smoothness, sweetness, and overall experience all played a role in our final rankings.
After sampling all seven options, we found a clear favorite, along with several other impressive choices. Here are the results.
7th Place: Kemps
The first thing we noticed about Kemps was its unusual color. While most of the other ice creams were bright white, this one had a creamy yellow-orange appearance. After checking the ingredient list, we discovered the reason—it contained eggs.
Once we moved past the surprising color, we tried it and found the flavor disappointing. It tasted more like a combination of custard and sweetened condensed milk rather than a true vanilla ice cream. The texture was acceptable, but it lacked the rich vanilla flavor we were hoping for.
Overall, it was enjoyable but not the standout vanilla ice cream we were searching for.
6th Place: Trader Joe’s
Trader Joe’s vanilla ice cream looked appealing at first glance, with visible vanilla flecks that gave it a premium appearance.
However, after tasting it, we all agreed that it was too sweet. The sweetness overwhelmed the delicate vanilla flavor. Although the texture was creamy and smooth, the overall experience felt average and didn’t leave a lasting impression.
5th Place: Aldi
Aldi’s vanilla ice cream performed better when it came to sweetness. Unlike some of the other options, it wasn’t overly sugary. One tester even described it as “sweet enough.”
It had attractive vanilla specks and a pleasant creamy texture. However, while it was enjoyable, it didn’t have anything particularly special that made it stand out.
This would be a great choice for birthday parties because it pairs wonderfully with sweet cakes and other desserts.
4th Place: Tillamook
If you are looking for an ice cream with an incredibly rich, smooth, and luxurious texture, Tillamook is a strong choice.
Every bite felt creamy and indulgent, and one tester described the texture as “luxurious.” It delivered an excellent mouthfeel and a premium ice cream experience.
The only downside was the lack of strong vanilla flavor. Instead of tasting like classic vanilla ice cream, it reminded us more of frozen sweet cream. It was delicious, but it didn’t fully satisfy our craving for authentic vanilla flavor.
Although it wasn’t our top vanilla pick, we agreed it would be amazing served with fruit pies, especially berry or cherry pie.
3rd Place: Breyers
Breyers impressed us with its balanced vanilla flavor. This ice cream featured visible vanilla flecks and delivered a more noticeable vanilla taste compared with many of the other brands.
It had a smooth and creamy texture, along with a pleasant level of sweetness. It performed well in every category, but it couldn’t quite compete with the top two choices.
I would happily buy it again, especially with a drizzle of hot fudge or another sweet topping to make it even better.
2nd Place: Ben & Jerry’s
Even before knowing the brand, I had a feeling this was Ben & Jerry’s. Perhaps it was because I’ve tasted many of their products before and recognized the familiar style.
However, the other testers were not influenced by the brand name, and they loved it. One tester said, “I love it! It tastes just like the kind you get from an ice cream shop.”
Everyone appreciated its smooth texture, creamy consistency, and subtle but satisfying vanilla flavor. It felt like a classic scoop-shop ice cream experience and was definitely a flavor we would happily keep in the freezer.
Winner: Häagen-Dazs
The clear winner of this taste test was Häagen-Dazs vanilla ice cream.
This is the kind of ice cream that makes you want to eat it straight from the carton. It is so delicious on its own that it doesn’t need any extra toppings or additions.
All of the testers agreed that it delivered the best combination of texture, creaminess, and vanilla flavor. It had the richest vanilla taste of all the brands while maintaining the perfect level of sweetness.
Even after multiple samples, we never got tired of eating it. Häagen-Dazs proved that a simple flavor like vanilla can still be extraordinary when it is made exceptionally well.
