Even though Sea Cliff Bridge—between Clifton and Coalcliff in New South Wales—is a well-known spot, most visitors don’t realize there’s a secret vantage point with sweeping aerial views above the bridge. The author only recently found the proper path despite living nearby for years and having explored many bush routes.
How to Get There
The bridge sits about 70 km south of Sydney and 20 km north of Wollongong.
Most people drive and use the car parking area on the ocean side at the south end. There’s also a small gravel lot right by the beginning of the bridge (look for the Sea Cliff Bridge sign); the hidden trail starts just beyond the bushes there.
The Trail
The path climbs from the parking spot into the bush via a rough dirt trail. It's not well-defined, but yellow ribbons tie across trees help guide the way.
Parts of the trail have loose soil and steep sections; there’s even a section where someone has knotted a garden hose around a tree so hikers can pull themselves up.
Lower Lookout vs. Upper Lookout
Lower lookout: Mid-trail, off to the side. You emerge from the trees for glimpses of Sea Cliff Bridge. But it’s risky: very steep, loose ground, close to cliff edges. Best to be extremely careful.
Upper lookout: Just a little further up. More open, flatter ground, safer footing, and better views of the bridge and coastline.
Safety Notes & Risks
The terrain is unstable: loose dirt, steep drop-offs. People have died in falls from the lower lookout.
Authorities in some cases issue fines to people using the lookout trail.
Basic precautions are strongly advised: sturdy footwear, caution near edges, awareness of one’s fitness and experience.
